The average American’s wealth is mainly comprised of homes and retirement assets.  Furthermore, recent studies have revealed that for a variety of reasons, non-probate methods to transfer assets is on the increase, including retirement plan beneficiary designations.  The Will is no longer the primary vehicle used to transfer assets upon death.  Gift Planners and Major Gift Officers need to be aware of these trends when working with donors and their advisors.  With 61% of U.S households owning tax advantaged retirement accounts, it behooves Gift Planners, Major Gift Officers and Financial Advisors to be well-versed in gifting options involving retirement plans.  This session will provide a general overview of the various types of retirement plans, including contribution, distribution, and inheritance rules and options.  It will also explore a variety of gifting strategies using retirement plans, both during life and upon death. Several cases illustrating retirement plan gifting strategies will shared and discussed.

Presenter 1:  Andy Morison, Assistant Vice President for Gift Planning – KU Endowment Association

Andy has been the Assistant Vice President for Gift Planning at the Kansas University Endowment Association since 2012.  Prior to his role at KU Endowment, he was the Gift Planning Director for Saint Luke’s Hospital Foundation in Kansas City, Missouri for 15 years, where he also served as President of Saint Luke’s Foundation’s real estate subsidiary.  Andy served as a Personal Trust Officer for Mercantile Bank, now US Bank, for 6 years prior to joining Saint Luke’s Foundation.  He holds bachelor degrees in English Literature and Education from the University of Kansas and a JD from Washburn University in Topeka, Kansas.  Andy has served on numerous organization’s boards and planned giving committees, and has served as President of MACGP, the Shawnee Mission Education Foundation, The Mercury Club of Kansas City, The Shawnee Mission East Fund, and currently serves as President of the House Corporation of the Pi Deuteron Chapter of the Phi Gamma Delta Fraternity at the University of Kansas.

Presenter 2:  Kristin Shore, Associate Development Director of Gift Planning – KU Endowment Association

Kristin Shore grew up in Manhattan Kansas. She received her Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management at the University of Kansas.  Following five years as a Program Consultant for the Kansas Department of Health and Environment Immunization Program, she spent five years as a Financial Advisor and was series 7, 66 and health and life insurance licensed. In October of 2016 she became the Associate Development Director of Gift Planning for the KU Endowment Association.
